FIRE Calculator in 2026: How Long Until You Can Retire Early?
Calculate your exact FIRE timeline with our [FIRE Number Calculator](/calculators/finance/fire-number-calculator).
The 4 FIRE Variations
Lean FIRE — Retire extremely frugally on $25,000-$40,000/year. FI number: $625,000-$1,000,000. Requires very low cost-of-living, often geographic arbitrage (moving to lower cost area or country).
Regular FIRE — Retire on your current spending level. FI number: 25x annual expenses. The classic approach.
Fat FIRE — Retire with $100,000+/year spending. FI number: $2,500,000+. More cushion, more options, requires higher income or longer timeline.
Barista FIRE — Semi-retire. Part-time work covers basic expenses ($15,000-$20,000/year), investment portfolio covers the rest. Popular for those who want to stop the corporate grind but still engage.
FIRE Timeline by Savings Rate

| 50% | 17 years | Retire at 37 if start at 20 |
| 60% | 12.5 years | Retire at 32.5 if start at 20 |

FIRE Numbers by Spending Level
| Annual Spending | FIRE Number (25x) | Safe Number (30x) |
|---|---|---|
| $30,000 | $750,000 | $900,000 |
| $40,000 | $1,000,000 | $1,200,000 |
| $60,000 | $1,500,000 | $1,800,000 |
| $80,000 | $2,000,000 | $2,400,000 |
| $100,000 | $2,500,000 | $3,000,000 |
For 40+ year retirements (retiring at 40 means potentially 50+ years of retirement), many FIRE practitioners use 30x-33x instead of 25x.
The FIRE Tax Strategy
Retiring early before 59.5 creates a unique tax challenge — you cannot access 401k without penalty. The solution:
1. Roth Conversion Ladder — convert traditional IRA to Roth during low-income years, access 5 years later
2. Taxable brokerage — bridge account for first 5 years of early retirement
3. Rule 72(t) — Substantially Equal Periodic Payments allow penalty-free 401k access before 59.5
