8 Legal Ways to Reduce SE Tax

1. SEP IRA contributions — Up to 25% of net income, max $70,000. Reduces SE tax base. Use our [SEP IRA Calculator](/calculators/finance/sep-ira-calculator).

2. S-Corporation election — Once profit exceeds $50,000-$60,000 consistently, pay yourself a reasonable salary and take remaining profit as distributions. SE tax only applies to salary.

3. Maximize business deductions — Home office, mileage ($0.70/mile in 2026), equipment, software, health insurance (100% deductible for SE individuals).

4. Solo 401(k) — $23,500 employee contribution + 25% employer contribution = up to $70,000 in deductions.

5. Hire family members — Wages paid to family are deductible. Children under 18 do not pay SE tax on those wages.

6. QBI Deduction — Up to 20% of qualified business income if income is under $197,300 single / $394,600 married (service businesses in 2026).

7. Pay quarterly to avoid penalties — Underpayment penalty is 7%. Miss payments on $30,000 owed = $2,100 penalty.

8. Deduct half of SE tax — Automatically deductible from adjusted gross income.
