eGFR (estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate) measures how much blood the kidneys filter per minute, normalized to body surface area. The glomeruli are tiny filtering units in the kidney — each kidney contains approximately 1 million of them. The gold standard is to measure actual GFR using inulin clearance or iohexol infusion (extremely precise but clinically impractical). eGFR uses serum creatinine — a muscle metabolism waste product that the kidneys filter — as a proxy.
