ZIP Code Elevation — Why Altitude Matters and How It Varies Across US ZIP Codes
Knowing the elevation of a US ZIP code matters more than most people realize. Elevation affects cooking times and baking chemistry, athletic performance and acclimatization, medication dosages for altitude-sensitive drugs, insurance and shipping logistics for extreme terrain, HVAC system specifications, and even internet satellite coverage calculations. How ZIP Code Elevation Is Measured
ZIP code elevation data is derived from the USGS National Elevation Dataset (NED) or the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) digital elevation model — raster datasets that record the ground surface elevation at regular grid intervals across the entire US. To compute the elevation for a ZIP code, we query the elevation raster at the ZIP code centroid coordinates (latitude/longitude from Census TIGER/Line ZCTA centroids) and return the elevation at that point.
This centroid-based approach returns the elevation at the geographic center of the ZIP code. For small, topographically uniform ZIP codes (flat coastal areas, flat plains ZIP codes, compact urban ZIP codes), the centroid elevation is representative of the whole ZIP. For large or topographically varied ZIP codes (mountain ZIP codes covering both valley floors and high ridges, or ZIP codes spanning canyons), the centroid elevation may differ significantly from the elevation at the specific address you care about. For precise address-level elevation, query the elevation raster with the exact address coordinates.
Elevation Reference Datum: NAVD 88
Elevation values are measured relative to a vertical datum — a reference surface for elevation measurement. The standard US elevation datum is the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88), which approximates mean sea level at the tide gauge in Father Point/Rimouski, Quebec. When you see "1,600 feet above sea level" for a Denver ZIP code, that means 1,600 feet above the NAVD 88 reference surface — approximately mean sea level.
Some older maps and datasets use the National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929 (NGVD 29). The difference between NAVD 88 and NGVD 29 values is typically a few feet or less, small enough that it rarely matters for ZIP code level analysis. Modern GPS elevation readings use the WGS 84 ellipsoid, which differs from NAVD 88 by a "geoid height" that varies by location (typically +/- 20–100 meters in the US).
